I have loved writing music about the wild frontier. Really, it's a dream come true. (And I've got some more great music in the works!)
However, I have also been looking for a way to add more value to the brand and use my writing skills. And so, I started the Hawken Horse Substack page. Every Monday I will release an article about something frontier related, it might cover a battle, a famous trapper, a war chief, music I'm working on or books I recommend. There is a free subscription as well as a paid. The paid level is only $5/month and includes 4 articles a month. The free includes about 1 article a month but also access to notes and other posts. The reason I'm only charging $5 a month is because (most Substack pages charge upwards of $10/mo) is because I love doing this and it helps "keep the lights on" but also a lot of people don't have extra income right now and I want to be realistic. And I have no intention of raising the cost later, I'd rather just get as many people on board who are interested.
The first article is called "Sweet Lips" and is about my opportunity to see and handle the famous rifle of the Battle of Kings Mountain. All the articles also include great photos to help give another dimension to the story.
One of the nice features of Substack is you can have articles sent directly to your email or if you download the app, you can have it read to you, kind of like a podcast.
